My path toward thinking of myself as an artist has been one crazy ride. Self doubt is the uninvited shadow of every creative person. But the bursts of joy, lightness, and freedom that accompany our creations make it all worthwhile. This week I decided to experiment and I tried using some watercolor paints to block out my collage. I cannot draw and I have no stomach for that old buzz saw, “anyone can learn to draw.” Piffle. I believe anyone can learn to express themselves through art and that’s what keeps me going.
Today’s collage represents our universal journey, a path through beautiful, challenging, and mysterious lands. I’m very pleased to bring you this quote from the Nobel prize-winning author, poet, and diplomat, Pablo Neruda.
“There is no insurmountable solitude. All paths lead to the same goal: to convey to others what we are. And we must pass through solitude and difficulty, isolation and silence in order to reach forth to the enchanted place where we can dance our clumsy dance and sing our sorrowful song – but in this dance or in this song there are fulfilled the most ancient rites of our conscience in the awareness of being human and of believing in a common destiny.”
